Life Before Man by Zdenek V. Spinar, illustr. by Zdenek Burian - basic text, superb illustrations. Some of the illustrations are rather dated - e.g. the sauropod dinosaurs. Nevertheless, this is still the best paleo picture book around. Despite the title, there are also some neat paintings of early man

The Fossil Book : A Record of Prehistoric Life by Pat Vickers Rich (Editor), Thomas Hewitt Rich, Mildred Adams Fenton, Patricia V. Rich, Carroll Lane Fenton - I only have the original edition by Fenton and Fenton. Sorta folksy style, but very readable. A good introduction to the various invertebrate groups, plants, fish and land animals from Earth's past. It may be out of date but still covers topics many other books ignore.

The Book of Life: An Illustrated History of the Evolution of Life on Earth Second Edition - by Stephen Jay Gould (Editor), Peter Andrews, John Barbercon, Jean-Paul Tibbles (Illustrator), Michael Benton (Contributor) - excellent coverage of the evolution of life on Earth. The lack of emphasis given to invertebrates in the later chapters (a fact Gould himself points out in his extended and very readable preface) mars this otherwise great book.
